Unitarian Universalist Council of Greater Cincinnati

What is Unitarian Universalism?

In 1961 the Unitarian and Universalist denominational associations merged, based on the affirmative votes of their member congregations. While the Unitarian and Universalist faiths are both hundreds of years old what is informally called ‘UU-ism’ has only been around for nearly 60 years.

Our religion is called liberal because it is a faith built on covenants and democratic polity. No one is automatically a Unitarian Universalist by birth. Ministers are not arbiters of congregants’ spiritual lives. There are no creedal tests. Members covenant with individual congregations that  in turn covenant with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) to affirm and promote the principles of our denomination. The principles are active, living guides. They can be revised and expanded to reflect wider areas of concern. However any changes are subject to the approval of congregations and their members.

The Principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations.

 We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:

  • The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
  • Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
  • Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
  • A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
  • The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
  • The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
  • Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

The UUA itself is divided into districts. The member congregations of the U.U. Council are part of the MidAmerica Region that serves congregations in 13 states and western Ohio.
